McLaren has just not been able to shrug away the tag of a midfield team. It is hard to believe that this is the same team that roared on the track by dominating heavily with a rate of more than 90% victory. In 1988, the Woking-based outfit won 15 or 16 races. That period was one of the greatest dominance any team had showcased until then. Fast forward to 2023, where the team has just been stuck in a trap where they can’t seem to reclaim their glory, having gone through multiple regulations and not nailing even one.
In 2022, FIA implemented new regulations, which heavily centered on the ground effect. While most of the teams botched their interpretation of the same, including straight 8x champions Mercedes; Red Bull tapped into speed gods or just Adrian Newey. However, the 2022 regs had a chastening impact on Mclaren.
Mclaren TP deemed the regulations as “restrictive”

According to the Papaya TP, Andrea Stella, the team was apprehensive about the innovation centered around the new rules. The development of the underbody has been a tricky aspect. However, one team has executed a masterclass at that.
According to Motorsport-Total, Stella said, “I have to admit, and I think most teams should admit that before the new generation of cars hit the underbody, we thought the regulations were pretty restrictive. But interestingly, as soon as you start driving, you realize that there is a lot of power, especially on the underbody. The ground effect can be exploited better from a technical point of view than you would have ever expected in Formula 1.”
Stella believes that teams such as Red Bull have been able to successfully develop a complex underbody which has given them the edge. The Mclaren TP further stated, “From a spectacle perspective, this means that whoever does a better job, like Red Bull is doing at the moment, can gain a consistent competitive advantage well beyond what could have been expected.”
The only team that has been able to come close to Red Bull nailing the new rules is Aston Martin. They brought about a 2.4-second improvement in their machine over the winter break. But can they challenge the mighty Milton Keynes at the moment?
An ‘Aston Martin’ reason for Max Verstappen and Co. to breathe a sigh of relief?
The Silverstone-based outfit radically changed the outlook of their team. With the recruitment of Dan Fallows to giving Fernando Alonso a multi-year contract and finally making a massive improvement in the wind tunnel. However, the team’s TP, Mike Krack, says he knows the “difference between confidence and arrogance.” The current reality is that they are “substantially behind Red Bull”.

Mike Krack told Auto Motor und Sport, “We have to be realistic. We have to look up, but we also have to look at third and fourth place. Things can change very quickly in the championship. We are not far ahead of Mercedes. As a team you can quickly drop down the leaderboard.”
He further added, “You can’t tell after a race whether you’re here or there. You need a little more data to really understand where you are. We started this year on a better footing, so it won’t be as easy [to improve] as last year. But we have to make progress if we want to stay where we are. Because even if we don’t do anything, we will go backwards.”
