As we know, Red Bull and Max Verstappen have been a notch above the rest this season. Because of that, Aston Martin and Mercedes are left fighting for P2. Before the two teams think of victory, their drivers need to close the gap to Verstappen. And as per Fernando Alonso‘s ex-boss, he has reduced the gap to the Dutchman and has been more successful than Mercedes in doing so.
Off-late, ex-boss of Benetton and Renault F1 team, Flavio Briatore has made a comeback to F1. No sooner has he made his way to the paddock than started giving public opinions. Since the beginning of the season, Alonso has been a consistent face on the podium. But after Mercedes’ recent pace gain, even Lewis Hamilton has joined the party at the top. Owing to Perez’s inconsistency, Hamilton and Alonso look like two formidable competitors for Verstappen. And between them, Alonso seems to have an edge, says Briatore.
Briatore said, as quoted by Speedweek, “Fernando did a good job and crossed the finish line just under ten seconds behind Verstappen, which is a sign that Aston Martin has caught up. They were stronger than Mercedes and made up important tenths with the upgrade in Montreal. In the race, Fernando overtook Hamilton and then stayed three to four seconds ahead of him until the end, bringing his second place to the finish line in a controlled manner.”
