The Hungarian GP was a full-on show of McLaren’s ground-breaking speed. Despite the warm climate at Hungaroring, the young duo of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri made sure his rivals bit the dust. Throughout the weekend, the papaya army showed off superior speed. During the Qualifying, Piastri beat reigning World Champion Max Verstappen to grab pole position. Even though some bumps came on the road, the Aussie soared to victory with a great show of team spirit by his teammate Lando Norris.
This week has been celebrations galore for McLaren on social media. Earlier today, the team’s official X page showed a post that said it is proud of Lando and Oscar for being the youngest 1-2 in F1 history. However, this claim is nowhere near the truth. There have been instances where racers who are even younger than Lando Norris (24) and Oscar Piastri (23) have grabbed the same positions. So, the fans were quick to get to the comment section, asking the Woking outfit to do thorough research before making such tall claims.

The Hungarian GP saw enough drama to last a lifetime for all F1 fans! On one hand, Max Verstappen shot off complaints on the team radio as he could not get control of his RB-20. On the other hand, Lewis Hamilton climbed the ranks with sheer speed to get into the podium positions. And most importantly, fans saw 23-year-old Oscar Piastri live up to the hype around him. The Melbourne boy seemed confident as he started the race from the top spot on the grid. And while Lando Norris found himself leading the pack towards the end, he showed how he values McLaren by sacrificing his position.

When Zak Brown‘s army took to its X handle and shared a post saying Piastri and Norris are the youngest 1-2 racers in Formula 1, the fans did not appreciate the misinformation. One of them said, “Sounds good but unfortunately it’s wrong.” This is because they found out that the Austrian GP in 2019 had an even younger pair of drivers claim the top 2 spots. It was Max Verstappen (who won the race) and Charles Leclerc (who came second), both of whom were 21 at the time.
Meanwhile, a few X users thought about another possibility. McLaren perhaps meant that Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri are the youngest 1-2 from the same team at any F1 race. However, even this claim is not at all true. So, one of them commented, “Idk if u saw it but they’re saying u can’t open Wikipedia in the qrts.” This is because it was the 2016 Malaysian GP where Red Bull had the youngest pair win the first two places in the grid. At that time, the winner of the race, Daniel Ricciardo, was 27 while his teammate Max, in second place, was only 19.

Have an interesting take?
Some followers poked fun at McLaren’s blatantly wrong statement that Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, who have a combined age of 47, are the youngest race winners in history. They remarked, “This is as legit as AD21“, meaning the orange-clad team’s tall claims have brought back memories of the 2021 edition of the Abu Dhabi GP. That was the race where Lewis Hamilton would have won, according to several fans, but Max Verstappen had the last laugh due to some dubious circumstances.
A commenter who seemed particularly angry with the factual inaccuracy in McLaren’s text, said, “Please fact check before posting… it’s getting embarrassing.” This is because only a few days ago, after the Hungarian GP Quali, the Papaya Army X page said Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri had gotten the third front-row lockout in McLaren’s history. When fans criticized the post, the team took it down because of the incorrect information.

Taking inspiration from the other times when McLaren posted some wrong info and deleted the tweets, a fan said, “There’s still time to delete/correct this, admin.“ However, the poster on Lando and Oscar being the youngest 1-2 position holders in F1 history is still up on Twitter. So, the heavy criticism does not seem to have reached the McLaren headquarters yet.
In the upcoming days, McLaren has the challenge of proving its performance at the Hungarian GP was not a one-hit wonder. The Belgian GP is right around the corner and we will see how Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri fare at a wet Qualifying in Spa. Now, dearest readers, get to the comment section and share your thoughts on McLaren’s probable results in this weekend’s race.
