Williams’ George Russell has been exceptional this season. Even with an uncompetitive car at his disposal, the young Brit has a hundred percent record in getting into Q2. Dubbed ‘Mr. Saturday’ by the F1 fraternity for this very reason, the Briton is still yet to be out-qualified by his teammate of two and half years at the Wantage-based team.

And Haas team principal, Guenther Steiner wants his rookie drivers, Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin,  to follow the path set by the 23-year-old.

What did Guenther Steiner say?

In an interview with RTL, the Haas team principal was full of praise for William’s driver and expects his rookie drivers to follow Russell’s growth path in F1.

“Russell is doing an incredible job by pushing the boundaries of Williams. A year ago it was impressive, this year it is even more,” said Guenther Steiner.

“I hope that Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin will also be able to follow his path in terms of growth.” (Translated via Google Translate)

“I believe that Russell is a rider capable of winning a world title if given the conditions to do so. In any case, his talent will only be effectively weighed when he has a competitive car at his disposal.”

Mercedes have specific plans for George Russell: Haas team principal

Given that Russell is a Mercedes junior driver, Steiner believes the team have already chalked out his career in F1 – the Silver Arrows know exactly what they want his future to look like.

It is true that he is on the market, but I would say that he is more on the Mercedes market or limited to the teams in orbit Mercedes.

“I think Mercedes knows exactly what they want to do with him.”

Ever since Russell blew everyone away with his almost race-winning drive at Sakhir in place of a COVID-struck Lewis Hamilton, the young Brit is heavily rumored to replace Valtteri Bottas at Silver Arrows.
