Many within the Formula One community label Max Verstappen as a ruthless and sometimes even reckless driver. However, the Red Bull driver defends himself by stating that’s what it takes to win.

Undoubtedly, the 2021 Formula One season was perhaps the most exciting season that we have witnessed in quite some time. Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton pushed each other to the limit throughout the year. In the end, it was the Dutch driver who became world champion in a dramatic fashion at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Max Verstappen points to one trait that you need to have if you want to win in F1

The Dutch driver is known to be ruthless when he is behind the wheel of an F1 car. However, instead of trying to remove that label, he states that you need to be a jerk if you want to dominate the track.

In the documentary, Verstappen said, “You are there to win. I don’t care how you do it as long as you cross the line. And yes sometimes you have to be a jerk for that. That’s just the way it is.”

The championship fight between the title contenders went down to the last race

The Red Bull prodigy started on pole for the last race of the season. But Hamilton took the lead as soon as the lights went out. Sergio Perez, Verstappen’s teammate, was adamant about not letting the Mercedes driver overtake him so Verstappen could catch up.

After passing Perez, it seemed like it was just a matter of time before Hamilton would win. However, when Nicholas Latifi crashed it led to a safety car being deployed. After a controversial decision given by the FIA, both Hamilton and Verstappen were wheel to wheel. And in a matter of seconds, the Dutch driver stole the lead from the Brit.

The Mercedes driver attempted but failed to overtake Verstappen, allowing Max to grab the lead all the way to the finish line.
