Is Lando Norris's Euro 2024 trip a distraction or a well-deserved break before the Hungarian GP?

The contagious Euro Cup fever has reached Formula 1 now! Lando Norris, the McLaren racer who currently holds the second position in the World Drivers’ Championship, has reached the UEFA Euro finals location in Germany. Thanks to the two-week-long gap between the British GP and the upcoming Hungarian GP, Norris has enough time to take a few days off of his busy F1 schedule to drown in soccer fever. Thus, he has decided to watch the final game of the Euro Championship between England and Spain firsthand at the Olympiastadion in Berlin.

Lando Norris wrapped up his outing at Silverstone last weekend with a podium finish behind Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen. With this, the 24-year-old has amassed a total of 7 podiums from the 12 races that have happened till now. But his latest P3 position at the British GP has to be special since it was Lando’s home race. Also, Norris must have wanted redemption after the crash with Max Verstappen at the Austrian GP, which resulted in his early retirement from the Red Bull Ring. Thus, riding high on his success at the British GP, Norris has shifted his focus from F1 to soccer for this weekend as he has flown down to Germany to support his country at the Euros.

On July 11, the UK soccer team went up against their rivals from the Netherlands in the Euro semi-finals. After a tension-packed session lasting 90 minutes where England led the Dutch with a score of 2-1, it was announced that Lando Norris’ home team has qualified for the finals. Now, the last game of the Euro Cup awaits England, and if they manage to grab victory, they will have defeated Spain, the current #8 position holder in the FIFA Men’s rankings.

Norris is now ready to support his countrymen while they take on the soccer team from his ex-McLaren partner Carlos Sainz’s country. Sharing an update on his excitement for the upcoming England vs. Spain match, the papaya army prodigy took to Instagram and uploaded a photo from Berlin.

He even wrote some words of encouragement for English soccer captain Harry Kane and his entire team that said, “Ready for the boys to bring it home.” Now, you must be wondering, since when did the wonderkid from the Woking outfit become a football fan?

Lando Norris supported his local football club since childhood

Hailing from Bristol City (Lando spent the majority of his childhood there before shifting to Glaston bury), the McLaren racer has been a supporter of the Bristol City Football Club since his early days. Lando’s father, Adam, is a prolific businessman and was friends with Bristol City shareholder Steve Lansdowne. Thus, it’s possible that Lando got to watch some of their games at the stadium. However, later on, his preference shifted to Manchester United during the club’s Cristiano Ronaldo era. The Portuguese star had started playing for the English Premier League squad in 2003.

In the late 2010s, Lando Norris’ racing career took off and before he knew it, he was in Formula 2, racing against the likes of Alex Albon and George Russell. And after scoring the second spot in the F2 Championship in 2018, he graduated straight to Formula 1, where McLaren took him up as their new recruit. Due to his busy schedule, Lando Norris confirmed at an interview that he no longer has the time to follow club football. However, his Instagram story update from the Euro Cup finals shows that he still supports his country’s soccer team fervently.
