Lewis Hamilton's subtle dig at English football—just playful banter or something more?

“It’s coming home!” chanted England soccer fans throughout the Euro 2024. But for the nth time, the Englishmen came home without the winner’s trophy. Lewis Hamilton, who won his home race, the British GP, on the Sunday before England’s Euro finals, intensely prayed for his compatriots to carry the country’s momentum forward. But he also knew “how England always is with the World Cup”. Unfortunately, his worst fear came true as the Three Lions succumbed to the mighty Spain 2-1.

Ahead of England beginning their playoffs, Hamilton emphasized how “proud” he was of the young England side. “I remember being young and thrown into the spotlight,” he told Eurosport. “I can’t imagine [what] it is like for those guys that are on the pitch.” He lauded the footballers for their “resilience” that produced their unbeaten run (1 win, 2 Draws) to the playoffs. At Silverstone, the 7-time champion and his teammate George Russell, along with a sea of England fans behind them, also celebrated their quarterfinal victory over Switzerland, watching the match live on stage.

But come Sunday in Berlin, England lost when it counted. 22-year-old Cole Palmer’s leveler wasn’t enough, as Spain’s Mikel Oyarzabal changed the draw in their favor. Under England’s post-match Instagram post, Hamilton commented: “So proud of you all, never gave up and that’s what matters👏🏾”. But here’s the unbelievable twist. As per an X post by @fiagirly, the Mercedes driver followed the England football team’s page pre-match. But some time after the heartbreaking loss, he unfollowed them.

George Russell also shared an Instagram story, telling his compatriots: “Hold your heads high. Our time will come”. But all this disappeared in a sea of social media users focusing on Hamilton’s follow/unfollow.

Fans hilariously troll “loser” England after Lewis Hamilton unfollows them on Instagram

Before England’s loss yesterday, the week before was probably the best one for the country’s sportsmen in decades. At F1’s British GP, the current grid’s only three Britons, George Russell, Lewis Hamilton, and Lando Norris, secured the Top 3 spots in qualifying. On race day, Hamilton showed his mettle to take his 9th home victory after a 945- day winless streak. Before these two events, England won the quarterfinals against Switzerland on Friday. And three days after Hamilton’s victory, England won the semifinals against the Netherlands 2-1.

Have an interesting take?

But suddenly, fans have forgotten all about England’s previous victories and the focus has shifted on Hamilton’s hilarious Instagram actions. One X user humorously theorized why Hamilton must’ve unfollowed them. They believed England’s loss on the Ferrari-bound driver’s 1 week British GP win anniversary might’ve pricked him.

This loss meant England continued their unwanted 58-year streak, since their last international trophy coming at the 1996 World Cup. Another fan blatantly took a shot at them, justifying Hamilton’s action.

That’s not all. There was more support behind the 39-year-old. One X user, who claimed he was a “Lewis hater”, still sided with him, fed up with England’s repeated heartbreaks.

Though Lewis Hamilton was born in Stevenage, England, his father Anthony Hamilton hails from Grenada, a country in the West Indies. A couple of fans hilariously declared that the Briton switched back to his Grenadian roots after the match.

Apart from his connection with England and Grenada, Hamilton is also an honorary citizen of Brazil. The Brazilians adore him and treat him as one of his own. Incidentally, even Brazil failed miserably in the Copa America 2024, getting knocked out in the quarterfinal by Uruguay. One dear fan hoped that this wouldn’t make the Mercedes driver start “hating” the sport.

Hamilton’s Instagram activity could’ve been accidental as well. Either way, this hilarity amused fans. At least, his message to the England team was heartfelt. Sometimes in sports, the losses unite the masses more than wins would.
