What do soccer legend Lionel Messi and tech behemoth Apple have in common? An insatiable appetite for new challenges, it seems! While Messi’s dream transfer to MLS’s Inter Miami saw him weave his magic, leading them to their inaugural final in just seven games, Apple, not to be left behind, is eyeing its own sporty conquest: Formula 1.

Fresh off the success of their MLS Season Pass, Apple is rumored to be eyeing significant play in another sports arena, following the recent success of a global soccer superstar in the US. That’s gonna be double the current TV rights deal, making everyone sit up in their pit stops!

Apple is said to be considering a turbo-charged $2 billion per annum bid for exclusive F1 streaming rights. In the latest “Business F1” pit stop (er, edition), reports suggest that Apple is aiming to introduce an F1 pass alongside its content-rich Apple TV app, adding more fuel to the rumor mill. However, there’s a bit of a speed bump: global rights won’t be theirs right away due to existing TV deals. If the Cupertino giant does get into gear, they might start racing from 2025, and by 2029, they’d have full throttle with exclusive global rights. Talk about playing the long game!

But why F1? Apart from their rumored F1 movie starring Brad Pitt (Silverstone, here we come!) and a documentary on the legendary Lewis Hamilton, it’s clear that Apple TV+ is accelerating its engagement in the race car universe.

However, will Apple secure the pole position with F1, or is this just another lap in their sports strategy? They’ve been flirting with the NBA, English Premier League, and NFL Sunday Ticket, among others. So far, only the MLS Season Pass and MLB Friday Night Baseball have crossed the finish line. Hoping for an electrifying match-up between tech and sports. On your marks, get set… wait for 2025.

Having announced this passion project back in March, our Mercedes maestro is personally bankrolling the film. Set to be a treat for racing aficionados, the documentary promises not just the adrenaline of F1 but an intimate portrait of Lewis’s road to stardom. Featuring candid interviews and never-before-seen footage, it paints a vivid image of the highs, lows, pit stops, and podium finishes of his career.

Now, one might wonder: what prompted this move? Lewis spills the beans, revealing that the blockbuster ‘King Richard’ served as his muse. The film, charting the inspiring journey of tennis legends Venus and Serena Williams under their father’s wing, left a profound mark on Hamilton. “Seeing the magic parents can weave when they’re driven and passionate is a sight to behold,” he mused.
