Mick Schumacher had a topsy-turvy 2022 season with multiple crashes and DNFs. Though he scored points at some races and was quite competitive in the mid-field, it was not enough for Haas. Most probably his crashes and inconsistency are the main reason behind Guenther Steiner choosing Nico Hulkenberg over him.
As BILD reports, there are speculations that Haas never had any concrete negotiations with Mick over his contract renewal. This can be shocking to some extent and contrary to what Haas has stated so far. If they did not have any major negotiations, then their decision to drop the young German was probably made up already.
In addition to this, the BILD reports also say that Mick may have found out about his eviction from Haas in a hotel lobby. That is certainly not the best way for a driver to know that he may be out of a drive next season. Now, these are unconfirmed details regarding the Schumacher-Haas split. Although if there is any weight to them, we might hear from Mick if he divulges anything on the same.
The 2020 F2 champion is rumored to join Mercedes as a reserve driver, given Mercedes is on the search for one. Nyck de Vries, who was one of their reserve drivers, is moving to AlphaTauri for a full-time F1 seat. While Stoffel Vandoorne is also likely to not continue as Mercedes reserve in 2023.

It was back in 2010 when they rejoined the sport and onboarded Mick’s father – Michael Schumacher. It might be always iconic to have somebody from his lineage or relation. Of course, it just becomes an added bonus to have a German driver on a German team.
Mercedes may also be enticed to develop the young raw talent of Mick for a future race seat. The German team would love to breed an F2 champion driver for when Lewis Hamilton retires. As Mick is just 23 years of age, there is a lot of time for Mercedes to give him a shot alongside George Russell.
