Sergio Perez became the first Mexican F1 driver to land a podium finish in the Mexican Grand Prix in 2021. He fought Lewis Hamilton for P2 until the very end of the race, but could only manage a P3. This time around though, he is ready to win at home.

In the 2021 Mexico City GP, Perez drove beautifully, but his teammate Max Verstappen came out on top. The race started with absolute chaos in the very first corner. Valtteri Bottas, who started from the front row, got tagged by Daniel Ricciardo from behind and spun amidst the oncoming traffic.

While Bottas continued the race, Yuki Tsunoda got caught up in the chaos and crashed. It would be money well spent for fans at the venue if this year’s Mexican GP can deliver half the excitement it did last year.

Sergio Perez is ready to treat Mexican fans with a win at his home GP

Checo has already shown his experience and maturity by winning under difficult conditions at the Singapore GP. With the dominant car that Red Bull is sporting this year, a non-Red Bull car winning seems like an exception. Given the context, it is not ludicrous to think Perez could actually win this weekend.

In the driver press conference ahead of the Mexican GP, Checo was asked if he “dared to dream” of winning this Sunday after missing out last year. Perez replied, Yeah, I’ve dreamed a few times already about it.”

“And it would be massive for me. Obviously, that’s the target for Sunday. It will not be easy. We need to be perfect throughout the weekend. So yeah, I think all the focus will be now on the racing stuff to try to maximize the weekend, and yeah.”

“At the end of the day, it’s another weekend with the same amount of points, but it’s the most special one for me.”

It will certainly be a special moment not just for him to win at home, but also for the Mexican fans to see him achieve the feat. But for now, he and his teammate are having fun engaging with the fans.

In a fun Meet the Fans event before the start of the racing weekend, the Red Bull teammates interacted with the fans and played some fun games. The host asked Max which celebrity he thought his teammate looked like.

The Dutchman answered, “Tom Cruise.” But what he followed up with made the fans make a bizarre demand. Verstappen said, “Actually I think he [Sergio Perez] is better looking.”
