“Extremely unlucky”: Sergio Perez after finishing P9 at Sochi
Sergio Perez, who qualified for the Russian GP at P8, crossed the checkered flag ninth. His teammate Max Verstappen, on the other hand finished on the podium, despite suffering an engine penalty and starting the race from the back of the grid.
However, at one stage of the race, Perez was running strong at P3 and was all set to finish on the podium before the rain fell at the closing stages of the race. The Mexican pitted on lap 50, two laps after his teammate, for intermediates, and dropped to P9.
“Yes, it’s obviously very disappointing. I think we were extremely unlucky today. Could have gone either way really, you know. If it rained a little bit less, then the people on the inters would have [suffered],” said Sergio Perez after the race.

“If it rained a bit more, it obviously favored them. I think at the point I was on the lap, it was a little bit too late to know, you know – the amount of rain we were going to have as well – so we were already on the podium, it was a tricky decision to make,” concluded Perez.
After the Russian Grand Prix, Sergio Perez sits fifth in the drivers’ championship with 120 points, just 7.5 points ahead of Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz.
