Does Carlos Slim's backing make Sergio Perez untouchable at Red Bull? What are your thoughts?

Mexico has stepped up to save their favorite F1 racer from Red Bull’s wicked axe. For the last few months, tension at the Austrian team’s garage has been rising because of Sergio Perez‘s frequent failure to match Max Verstappen. Even though both of them drive the same racecars, Checo could only bring 24 points while his Dutch teammate scored 83. The stark deficit to Max led to people speculating that Perez would lose his seat due to a lack of good performance.

Red Bull has a history of getting rid of every racer who fails to live up to the expectations of its top officials. In 2019, Christian Horner‘s army had swapped Pierre Gasly with Alex Albon mid-season because of Gasly’s poor results. And now, fans had expected a similar incident in Checo’s case too. On top of the existing rumors, Horner made a comment: “[Perez] knows it’s unsustainable to not be scoring points.” This had almost sealed the deal that Sergio Perez would lose his Red Bull seat because of a performance clause in his latest deal with the team that was made earlier this season, but it seems like Perez’s tenure at Red Bull is not over yet.

The Mexican has found a saving grace (rather, a billionaire angel) to help him stay on for a little bit longer. As per the Italian Motorsport, the 34-year-old has now gotten financier Carlos Slim to back him for continuing his journey with RBR. Slim is the richest man in all of Mexico, with a net worth of $84 billion, and he was the wealthiest person in the world between 2010 and 2013. With such a huge force behind Perez, Red Bull has suddenly decided against dropping Checo and taking up a new recruit to lead their Championship fight forward.

Sergio Perez has always had a huge financial backing to move ahead in F1

Today, Perez is a big name in the F1 world because of his 6 Grand Prix victories, but this was not always the case. When the Mexican was only 14, he could not participate in the lead-up go-kart event to the CART Grand Prix race due to internal politics. At that time, Slim and his huge telecommunications brand Telmex came through and made sure Checo had no trouble whatsoever to take part in his karting race.

Now, Sergio Perez has once again availed the help of Carlos Slim to survive at Red Bull. This has sent all of the Milton-Keynes team’s plans in turmoil. Several reports suggested VCARB racer Daniel Ricciardo would get Perez’s seat beside Max Verstappen while Liam Lawson would have partnered with Yuki Tsunoda as the Aussie’s replacement. But thanks to Checo’s billionaire trump card, he will be there in Red Bull till at least the Mexican GP.
