It must be hard being Sebastian Vettel, or a Vettel fan. Every time you think that 2020 just can’t get any worse for the poor chap, it does. The latest heartbreak to plague the 4-times world champion was an embarrassing Q1 exit. And as a result of that, he’ll start the Italian Grand Prix in P17.

However, the blame can’t be solely attributed to him, for he was let out onto the track in some horrendous traffic. After being stuck behind George Russell while trying to get out of Q1, Vettel gave up and headed back to the pits since he couldn’t improve his time in the first two sectors.

As you’d expect, he was visibly upset and frustrated. He was heard venting out on the team radio about the traffic in qualifying and even threw a component out from his cockpit. But after the anger subsided, Vettel decided to stay at the track and watch the rest of qualifying.

What Sebastian Vettel made of that crowded qualifying session?

After his disastrous qualifying session, Vettel was gracious enough to turn up for an interview where he touched on the messy qualifying session.

Vettel said, “There was no point to start overtaking each other (in the out lap). It’s the minimum time, so everybody is making it. (But) the moment you start overtaking it’s causing trouble.”

The overtaking Vettel refers to in the above statement was primarily directed at Kimi Raikkonen. The Alfa Romeo driver went past Vettel and Russell on the out lap but he himself found trouble up ahead in the form of Esteban Ocon who held him back.

Coming back to Vettel and Ferrari, their qualifying debacle suggests that we won’t be seeing either car make it into the top 10 on Sunday. Perhaps Charles Leclerc, starting in P13, may (luck forbidding) get a point or two. But for Vettel, only a miracle can get him to add to his already dismal points tally.

You just got to feel for him. How long will this continue? It’s getting too painful to watch.
