Sebastian Vettel has had some great rivals on the Formula One grid, but one rivalry that stands out is the one with Fernando Alonso. The German had great on-track battles with the 2-time world champion. And the Spaniard’s comeback to the sport in the 2021 season made Vettel nostalgic for their fights.

The 4-time world champion may not have been competing for the world title, but he had an epic battle during the season with Alonso for the Overtake award.

The two drivers had great title fights, but for this season it was a different case. Alonso and Vettel had been competing for the most overtakes in a season, and in the end, it was the Aston Martin driver who came out on top.

Speaking of his battles with Fernando, Vettel said, “It’s been a long year, lots of overtakes. Obviously, we had some qualifying sessions that didn’t go our way and had to make our way up in the race, sometimes more [successfully] than other times.”

“I did enjoy it. The midfield was very tight, and obviously fighting with Fernando [Alonso] is special. It’s been quite a while that we’ve been fighting and some memories came back, and last time we properly had a fight was for the championship. It was good fun but obviously we are aiming to be a bit further up the grid next year and challenging for… bigger trophies,” Vettel concluded.

What did Sebastian demand after winning the Overtake award?

The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix was perhaps the most dramatic race that the F1 community witnessed in recent years. As the chequered flag dropped, it was Max Verstappen who was crowned world champion. However, he wasn’t the only one to take home an award that day, as Vettel managed to bag the award for the most overtakes in the season.

When he was in parc ferme, he asked his colleagues about the award on the team radio. When his race engineer told him that he had won, Vettel jokingly asked, “What’s the prize? One million jellybeans. Okay, thank you, guys.”
