Sebastian Vettel has been an unwavering voice of change in Formula 1, using his platform to drive a shift towards a better future. The German helped clean the stands in Silverstone and dedicated multiple helmets towards a message that drives home. However, this drive has been relatively new for the champion; he recently started with big leaps towards his goals, all after his departure from Ferrari.
Nonetheless, the two aren’t connected. “I didn’t have to change teams in order to learn that there are more important things in life than trophies.”
According to Vettel, it has been a journey of growth that has opened his eyes to the troubles of the world. “I think I’ve just gotten older. Even as a father, views and opinions shift. You take on responsibility and grow with it. In addition, I’m naturally curious and open to other opinions.” Vettel further argues that his ardor for change is independent of his line of work.

“Time goes on, even if paradoxically it seems to stand still in Formula 1 with some things or opinions. When I am out and about now, I notice things that I never noticed before.” Vettel recounts a eureka moment he had at the airport. While simply strolling around, he realized the sheer number of people on the planet, each with their own stories to tell.

In that moment of realization, another one followed. “How absurd it is sometimes that you take yourself so seriously and think that everything should revolve around that. In relation to this, my problems are probably all luxury problems.”
Thus, Vettel’s crusade for change is beyond the limits of the racetrack, something the German is truly passionate about.

It’s no surprise that the Formula 1 star values the works of the young activist. In fact, he awaits the day to sit down and have a conversation with her. “I would even welcome it, and we probably share a lot of views when it comes to Formula 1. I think it’s great.”
Vettel explains his admiration for Thunberg. “It is encouraging that she is fighting for our future with such determination. A real example that the whole world should follow and, above all, older men should pay more attention.”
