These are exciting times for the Aston Martin F1 team. Not only will compete in 2021 having taken the most significant leap in terms of performance last season, but also with the four-time world champion, Sebastian Vettel, behind the wheel of their car.
The German is truly a coup for them – aside from his sheer driving ability, he’s a keen learner who takes notes right after a race instead of heading for the airport. His thirst to understand every single detail of the car is second to none on the grid.
Team principal Otmar Szafnauer thinks his acquisition is like gaining an engineer in the team – “He asked all the right questions and a lot of them. He’s really hungry for knowledge.”

“An engineer described Sebastian to me as [like] having a performance engineer behind the wheel. He wants to know as much, if not more than the performance engineer you have working on the car, whose job it is to understand every little aspect of car performance. Seb wants to know that much – plus more,” Szafnauer continued.
“That’s a good trait to have, he has that, he carried that with him to our team. We see it and he is really, really hungry, as he said, to have fun again in Formula 1.”
But can the speed of Sebastian Vettel emulate his engineering skills?

The German is under intense pressure after having a torrid end with Ferrari. Though there are no question marks on his work ethic, his reputation as a racer is in tatters. Hence, many in the paddock believe he is past his prime. However, Szafnauer is confident in the abilities of his marquee driver –
“The way I look at it is at 33 years old you don’t forget how to drive a Formula 1 racing car fast… Seb is very experienced but not over the hill by any means at the age of 33.”
Lawrence Stroll is providing Vettel with a new lease of life at Aston Martin. It is the best possible scenario for him after the season he’s had along with minimal vacancy at other outfits. Should he take them into a different stratosphere this season, he will silence his critics.
