During an F1 podcast, Racing Point team principal Otmar Szafnauer spoke on various subjects. Among them, he opened up on the outgoing Sebastian Vettel, who is in danger of not making it on the 2021 F1 grid. It is worth noting that Szafnauer and Vettel have been on friendly terms for a long time. Among the many rumours, some have suggested that Vettel could be off to the newly-formed Aston Martin team. However, Szafnauer said, “Seb hasn’t called me. So I haven’t had the conversation with him.”

Apparently, the two have been friends even before Vettel’s Formula One days. However, the German driver has yet to get in touch with the Racing Point team boss.

Is luring Vettel to Aston Martin a good idea?

Admittedly, nabbing a driver of Vettel’s stature to Racing Point could be a massive boost for them. Especially considering that Red Bull have praised him for being very detail-oriented, his inputs could help the team develop. A brand new team like Aston Martin will obviously need all the help it can get, and Vettel could be the perfect person to help develop the car.

Admittedly, rivals Alfa Romeo likely had the same idea last year when it roped in Kimi Raikkonen alongside Antonio Giovinazzi. In addition to that, the team doubled the experience when Robert Kubica joined as the reserve/development driver. The only difference between the soon-to-be Aston Martin team and Alfa Romeo is that the former are eyeing the top 3 positions.

Obviously, trying to upset Mercedes, Ferrari or Red Bull is a Herculean task. However, the plucky team can be sure that they will give them a darn good fight. On the other hand, they cannot ignore the potential for midfield threats like McLaren and Renault. The former have been on an upswing and even broke its 5-year podium drought with a 3rd place in Brazil.
