Many in F1 are aware that Scuderia Ferrari possesses a fair amount of power in the sport. The Italian outfit even has the power to veto any regulations if they see fit. So, if the FIA tries to make it easier to implement crucial rule changes amid the corona crisis, the Maranello team can oppose it.

The COVID-19 crisis has taken a toll on many public events and sporting series. So, the FIA announced a new measure to overrule the need for total unanimity among the teams to approve rule changes. Instead, the sport only needs a majority, but La Gazzetta dello Sport reported that Ferrari still retains its right to veto any moves.

Correspondent Andrea Cremonesi said, “In reality it does not affect the possibility for Ferrari to use the veto at World Council level. In the event that, by majority vote, a budget cap contrary to the Scuderia’s interests is for example decided.”

Can F1 go on without Scuderia Ferrari?

Apparently, the decision comes in the wake of Mattia Binotto threatening that the team could pull out of F1. Apparently, they do not want the budget cap figure to fall below $145 million.

Speaking to El Mundo, McLaren CEO Zak Brown said, “I would hate to see Ferrari leave the sport. However, I think the sport could survive with 18 cars, even if I would really prefer that they stay.”

However, former Ferrari driver Gerhard Berger agreed with the Italian outfit, on the budget cap figure. Speaking to Auto Motor und Sport, the DTM series boss said, “It should be lowered to $100 million, without exception. In my opinion, the first question that everyone should be asking is how can we survive this crisis?”.

The good news is that the 2020 F1 season may resume soon, with a tentative date in place. So, the F1 drivers and teams will be itching to shake off the rust.
