“A lot of people criticize Formula 1 as an unnecessary risk. But what would life be like if we only did what is necessary?” Very well said by the legendary Niki Lauda. As Oscar Piastri makes comments regarding the Indy500, which showcases his capacity to not take unnecessary risks, Fernando Alonso’s awkward reply to him leads the IndyCar fans to troll F1. But what was this conversation all about?
The Indy 500 is just around the corner scheduled to take place this Sunday. The Indy 500 has a special place in the motorsport world. It is right up alongside the 24 Hours of Le Mans and Monaco GP. These three races together are known as the triple crown. Fernando Alonso is the only F1 driver on the current grid who has won 2 out of these three races, with the Indy 500 being the one missing for the record.
Tom Clarkson: Fancy the Indy 500?
Piastri: Not particularly, 240mph into turn 1. If you get it wrong it's gonna hurt. [Asks Fernando] Does it hurt? You didn’t crash I know.
Alonso: I did.#F1 #IndyCar #MonacoGP pic.twitter.com/nfcVNvSwcS

Fernando Alonso did try his hand at the Indy500 in an attempt to win the Triple Crown. The first time in 2017 was impressive where the Spaniard led for 27 laps and then engine problems struck him. During the Thursday Press Conference before the Monaco GP, Oscar Piastri was asked whether he would like to race in the Indy 500. However, while answering, he gets a fact wrong about Alonso which triggered an awkward response from the Spaniard.
According to the Tweet posted by @autosport, during the Press conference Tom Clarkson asked Oscar Piastri if he fancied the Indy 500 to which he replied: “Not particularly, 240mph into turn 1. If you get it wrong it’s gonna hurt. [Asks Fernando] Does it hurt? You didn’t crash, I know.” Fernando Alonso, who actually crashed during the 2020 Indy 500 practice, awkwardly replied, “I did.”
