Ryan Reynolds: Marketing genius or just lucky? Turning $220M into a Deadpool stunt—what's your take?

It’s Chimichanga time in the Formula 1 world! Well, did you get the Deadpool reference? Because if you didn’t, you need to hit the theatres and check out the all-new Deadpool & Wolverine right away because the Belgian GP will probably turn into a red carpet for the movie’s stars this weekend. F1’s most anticipated race at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps might be even more special this time. This is because Alpine’s A524 will take on a new look to promote Ryan Reynolds’ latest flick that will hit the theatres soon.

Hollywood superstar Ryan Reynolds is in the middle of the press tour for Deadpool & Wolverine. Meanwhile, Alpine is going to have its 14th Grand Prix this season as its recruits, Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon, will line up at Spa for an epic faceoff with their rivals. Now, Reynolds has a special link to the Enstone outfit since he was a part of the investment group that bought a 24% stake in Alpine last year for a whopping $220 million.

Naturally, Reynolds couldn’t afford to miss his F1 team’s outing at the Belgian GP, even though he needed to attend the promo for his new movie as well. Thus, the Green Lantern star seems to have hatched a great plan to merge his movie’s promotions with the upcoming F1 race weekend.

Turning Alpine into a big media stunt to spread the word about Deadpool & Wolverine, Ryan Reynolds has made sure the team’s cars get a makeover for the Belgian GP. So, when you check out the different race cars that appear at Spa-Francorchamps on Sunday, keep an eye out for Alpine’s special Deadpool-themed livery.

According to the reports, the A524 will drop its conventional black, pink, and blue livery to show off a bright red, black, and yellow combination. For those who do not know: red and black are the colors of Ryan Reynold’s Deadpool character. Similarly, yellow is Wolverine’s color. If this was not all, even the Alpine racers will take part in the show as Esteban Ocon will have a Deadpool mask-themed helmet and Pierre Gasly will sport a Wolverine one. But guess what, this is not the first time an F1 team will be a part of a Hollywood movie’s promo!

Have an interesting take?

For fans of F1 who got into the sport in recent years, the Alpine x Deadpool & Wolverine collaboration might seem unique. However, this is far from the first time a movie has reached its audience through a grand promo using Formula 1 cars. Let us take you back to the 2005 Monaco GP that saw Red Bull take on the ‘dark side’. The team played a role in the promotions of ‘Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith’. So, its cars had a special livery in honor of the movie.

Another Red Bull stunt that is truly one for the books is the team’s promotion of ‘Superman Returns’ in 2006. This turned out to be a lucky charm for the Austrian squad as one of its recruits, David Coulthard, snatched Red Bull’s first-ever podium with the ‘Superman’ car. In celebration, the Team Principal Christian Horner even jumped into a pool in Monaco wearing just the red-and-blue cape, creating one of the most iconic moments in F1.

Well, Red Bull has come a long way since winning its first podium in 2006. Right now, the Milton Keynes outfit is leading the World Championship, having won 13 podium finishes in this season alone. But the same cannot be said about Alpine, which is currently sitting in the third-last spot on the Constructors’ table with just 9 points.
