Lewis Hamilton was in the spotlight when he opted to move to Mercedes by not renewing his contract with McLaren in 2012. The Briton drove for the Woking-based team for 6 years and won his maiden title with them in 2008. However, he eventually decided to move to Mercedes and signed a multi-year deal with the Silver Arrows.

Hamilton’s move to Mercedes was criticized by many at the time as Mercedes was just a midfield team and Mclaren had already won multiple champions till then. As people saw it as a downgrade and a bad move, Red Bull boss Christian Horner came out to praise Hamilton and warn McLaren.

I think McLaren would admit that. Lewis is an outstanding driver and in Lewis and Jenson they had a hugely strong driver line-up.”

While many doubted his move to Mercedes, the 37-year-old has proved his doubters wrong by winning 6 championships with the Brackley-based team.
