What a horror start to the British GP! Zhou Guanyu went flying into the barriers as George Russell collided with him. Russell was unharmed as he left the car with no damages. However, the Alfa Romeo man spun around into the gravels and onto the stands.

The crash was a frightening sight to all the viewers in the world. The race was subsequently red flagged and the drivers were to start from their qualifying orders as all the cars did not complete lap 1. Meanwhile, the Brit’s car seemed to have suffered the least damage. But Russell couldn’t race because of a stern regulation from the FIA.

After the crash, the Mercedes man immediately jumped out of his car to check Zhou. And subsequently, he did not drive his car back to the garage for repairs after the red flag. Furthermore, a flatbed truck was used to reprimand his W-13, which ultimately disqualifies him.

George Russell frustrated with the FIA for not allowing him to re-start the race

A frustrated Russell revealed his disappointment after his crash. His streak of finishing in the top 5 in 2022 also ends on his home turf. Speaking after the crash, he said, “I jumped out of the car to see if Zhou was ok. I saw it was red flagged straight away. When I came back to the car I couldn’t quite get it started for whatever reason so I ran back to the team to check.

I told the marshals to leave the car and when I got back it was on the back of the flatbed. As soon as you get assistance you can’t restart. We are trying [to appeal] but they are pretty adamant, the FIA. It’s one of those unique scenarios.”

It is a disappointing afternoon for Russell and Mercedes in their home turf. But ultimately the safety of the drivers matters and we are glad that Zhou did not suffer any injury.
