Yet another day in the George Russell-Mercedes saga, and yet another update. While many rumors stated that the team would announce their 2022 lineup at the British GP, it seems that the announcement will be delayed beyond the race at Silverstone.

Mercedes might reconsider announcing the Russell-Hamilton lineup at Silverstone

The latest reports from credible F1 reporter, Tobi Gruner, state that the Brackley-based outfit will give the seat to Russell, but they might not announce it at the British GP; he thinks they will wait for the summer break.

He said, “I expect George to get the 2nd Mercedes cockpit for next year. But I’m not sure Mercedes will make an announcement already this weekend. The original plan was to wait till the summer break, according to my info. But plans can change of course.

The Brit wants to clear the air about his future

The 23-year-old is part of the Mercedes junior driver program and has his contract with Williams expiring at the end of the season. Coincidentally, Valtteri Bottas’s contract is also running out at the end of the year. Hence, the Brit wants to sort out which team he will be representing on the grid in 2022.

He said, “I haven’t really spoken about it [with Toto], that’s always just been my mindset [to conclude the talks quickly],” said Russell. “It’s in everyone’s best interest. I’m just focused on the here and now really.

‘But I’m sure everything will be sorted no later than the end of the summer break really. I think we’d all want a nice summer break off when the season’s this intense, not messing around with contracts!,” Russell concluded.
