While Mercedes hoped for better results on the favorable Singapore track, they did not fare so well. George Russell barely managed to finish P14 and Lewis Hamilton squeezed in 2 points at P9.

In doing so, Russell lost his streak of finishing in the top five of every race. Mercedes tweeted a self-deprecating post commemorating Russell’s top five streak, and the fan reactions poured in.

Most fans lamented their Mr. Consistent’s downfall, reacting with heartbreak and crying emojis.

Then there were others who appreciated Mercedes’ social media presence. Fans took some comfort that Mercedes was capable of making a joke at their own expense.

After crossing the line with the fastest lap to his name, Russell said: “We were in no man’s land, to be honest. Potentially it was [worth switching to slicks], because at the restart we were flying – I overtook three people on one lap after the Safety Car.”

The Mercedes driver had gambled with an early switch to slicks but to no avail.

“I’m pleased that the issues from yesterday and FP1 have been resolved, and I guess a bit of confidence [has been] restored that I haven’t lost it and I didn’t qualify three seconds off the pace due to a lack of talent. But it’s such a shame – we had a car to win this week.”
