Red Bull and Honda, together, pulled off a shocker in 2021 to win Max Verstappen his first-ever Formula One title against much resilient Mercedes AMG. However, the Milton Keynes outfit aren’t keen on making this a one-time event and are rather looking to repeat their 2021 success over the follow-up season as well. But, only this time, Ferrari could join Mercedes to hinder Red Bull’s hot pursuit of the championship.

Dr. Helmut Marko recently opined that the championship battle could well remain between Red Bull and Mercedes over the unpredictable 2022 F1 season. But, that doesn’t seem to be the case at the moment as Ferrari’s frequent breakthroughs in recent weeks have started to irk Red Bull’s engine designer, Honda.

E10 fuel breakthrough induces fear in Honda

According to Formu1a.uno, a source close to Honda sounded quite displeased with the fact that Ferrari were able to reduce the E10 fuel deficit by 20hp with the help of Shell.

Rather enviable if Ferrari had managed to contain the deficit in just 20hp, as Binotto made a little maliciously understand…” the source said.

The name ‘E10’ is derived from the fact that the fuel carries 90% of fossil fuel and 10% of ethanol. And this caused the 2021 F1 cars to lose as much as 80hp. But, with Ferrari starting to retrieve the lost power back, there is a tinge of uneasiness within the paddock.

And in terms of the total power recovery, Ferrari have revived the recovery value from negative to positive, making a huge impact even before the start of the 2022 campaign; From -8% to 6%.

The Maranello factory now own an engine that is extremely light compared to the rival engine-makers, Honda, Mercedes, and Renault. There is the fear of poor reliability, but with such a light engine, Ferrari are certainly going to cherish a massive advantage, heading into the 2022 season.
