The Australian GP has over-delivered more than what it promised. Kevin Magnussen losing his rear-right tire after running into the wall caused the race to be red-flagged for the second time. The restart, for just 2 laps, saw what can only be defined as absolute carnage. All remaining 16 drivers wanted to make the most of the restart. However, too many got trigger-friendly on the throttle, causing collisions, spins, and whatnot. Among them were Alpine teammates, Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly. The duo’s relationship was already running on thin ice and the incident may leave the team’s management with a headache.
Growing up, Gasly and Ocon were great friends who often practiced together on the tracks. However, some incidents during competitive racing saw them grow apart. Despite entering adulthood and competing at the highest level of motorsport, the duo never made amends. However, fate had some other plans and brought them both together to be teammates at Alpine.

Let’s come back to the chaos caused by the race restart. Carlos Sainz, in an attempt to overtake his fellow Spaniard, Fernando Alonso, clipped him from behind, causing him to spin around. In an attempt to avoid being a part of the pile-up, Gasly steered sharply toward his right. However, little did he know that his teammate was right beside him and they both collided. Until then, both drove phenomenally, especially Pierre, who stationed himself firmly in P5 behind Sainz. The incident ended the race for both Frenchman. In an attempt to avoid any conflict, team boss Otmar Szafnauer came to Gasly’s rescue, explaining how he perhaps did not see Esteban in his mirrors before turning into him.
Take a look at how fans reacted to their collision.
