The 2021 Formula 1 season seems like a distant dream. The nail-biting fights for the chequered flag were a thing of beauty, but now, a thing of the past. No one forgets the last lap of Abu Dhabi. Many cried, and many rejoiced. However, the title fight coming down to the last race did not happen out of thin air. Multiple collisions, DNFs, penalties, tears, and sweat later, one thing is clear- the Brazilian Grand Prix seems to never favor Max Verstappen in his bid for the championship. And maybe he is still reeling from the chaos of São Paulo.
Apparently, the Singapore Grand Prix is not the only weekend acting as the Achilles’ heel for the world champion. The Verstappen train seems to halt at Sau Paulo, albeit momentarily. The weekend has always been a major shock to the Dutch driver in his title fights. But since the title fight for 2023 has already wrapped, Max Verstappen has little to worry about, yet he probably wants to skip the second station after Austin.

If anything, what the events of Sao Paulo in 2022 taught us was that neither Lewis Hamilton nor Verstappen had taken lessons from their head-to-head fights in 2021. Seven laps in, the two world champions collided with each other. However, it did little to deter Hamilton as he finished P2 in the race while Max Verstappen fell back behind to P6. The sprint race, a day before, was no less gruesome for the Dutch driver. The confidence that Verstappen brought on the track had all of a sudden imploded. The Brazilian Grand Prix so far, has never, barring 2019, worked out for the Red Bull driver.
max: we go to brazil?
“yeah two races”

At the United States Grand Prix, the two world champions were reminded of the past Brazilian events and were asked if they were hoping for a certain outcome. Verstappen asked rhetorically, “We go to Brazil?” To which the journalist reminded, “Yeah, two races.” Verstappen then jokingly responded, “Yeah I know, f*ck. No Sh*t Sherlock, f*cks sake.” Maybe the Dutch Driver had PTSD flashbacks of the past two years.
In 2021, Max Verstappen started on the front row with Valtteri Bottas. The Dutch driver overtook the Mercedes driver to take the lead, however, his advantage came short as Hamilton charged from P10. In a stunning drive from the mid-field, the Briton picked on the Ferraris and the McLarens. And before Verstappen could rattle his Red Bull for defense, Hamilton took the lead of the race on lap 58 of 71. It was a costly loss for the Dutch driver as his lead was cut down from 21 points to 14.

However, Verstappen has had little to sulk for in this season. Winning 14 of the 17 races, the Dutch driver can comfortably stretch his legs in his pilot box despite starting P6 in Austin. On the contrary, the Brackley-based outfit has upped their game.
The story so far at the United States Grand Prix
With McLaren on Red Bull’s tail, the Brackley Outfit has now hoped on the Austrian Outfit’s back. As McLaren emerged from the gallows to put up a fight with the six-time constructors, Mercedes, itself, made a McLaren 2009 turnaround.

With the new floor upgrade, the silver arrows are predicted to be a tenth faster. However, simulations may not provide a complete picture. But the estimations have materialized in the on-track performance at the United States Grand Prix. With Lewis Hamilton qualifying P2 and George Russell, just ahead of Verstappen, Mercedes is ready to take on the Bulls.
Red Bull, on the other hand, has brought no more upgrade packages than a paint job inspired by the Lone Star State. Although, the Dutch driver executed his dominance perfectly in the sprint race, starting sixth, with a closer grid, could hamper the RB driver’s American weekend. Sergio Perez, on the other hand, made it to Q3, albeit qualifying ninth on the grid. The battles ahead are a tough one for the Red Bull drivers.
