2022 saw one of the craziest driver’s market messes in quite a while. So many drivers switched teams, and it was quite chaos with contractual legalities. McLaren was one team that was at the center of this chaos with the Oscar Piastri saga. While they have onboarded a young gun in Piastri, the future may have other plans for their British protégé Lando Norris. It has been 4 seasons since Norris debuted and McLaren has not been able to deliver a winning car. It won’t be long before he covets another team.

There have been several rumors that Norris may wish to switch to Red Bull or Mercedes if the Woking team takes a long to deliver a good fast car. Although McLaren CEO Zak Brown is not worried about losing Lando to any other team.

As per Motorsport.com, talking to the media, Brown said, “No, because I’m convinced we’re going to give him [Lando Norris] a winning car. We have a long-term contract with him. I think he feels very comfortable within the team.”

Zak explained how they have an established plan and trajectory to give Norris a championship-contending car. And he is confident that the young Briton believes in that plan.

He added, “He knows the journey we’re on. He has bought into the journey that we’re on, and I think it’d be early to be worried about it [other teams taking Norris].”

While this may be just a statement to tighten their grasp on Lando, so far Norris has not been happy with the 2022 step-back in performance.

Whether he looks outside to other teams like Red Bull and Mercedes is a thing to watch out for. As things stand, these other teams’ whispers are just rumors without any substance.

Will Lando Norris look beyond McLaren at Red Bull or Mercedes?

There was a time when Lewis Hamilton took the leap of faith and left McLaren in 2012. While Norris finds himself in an alternate and rather reverse situation, it is still a huge decision to take a call upon. The team is currently in the midfield and Norris wishes to either take the Woking team to the top or switch to a top team.

So, if McLaren does not deliver a winning car until the end of 2025 when Norris’ contract ends; will he look at other teams? The papaya outfit has certainly done its level best to develop and get to the top as quickly as possible. They have also done a clever job of tying up Norris with a long-term contract until 2025.

But contracts don’t guarantee the future will pan out exactly the way the team envisioned it. So, Lando would not hesitate if he still is fighting in the midfield 3 years later. His caliber can surely land him a drive at the Silver Arrows or even Red Bull if he approaches things at the right time.

There have been crazier driver moves than this prospect of Norris at Brackley or Milton Keynes. Back in 2012, many speculated Hamilton won’t ever win with Mercedes, and a decade later, we can look at the record books to verify those claims.
