Ahead of the 2022 season, the FIA announced changes to the rules with the hope of bringing the grid closer. The aim was to allow smaller teams a chance to challenge their more established rivals, but Red Bull, Ferrari, and Mercedes continue to dominate the grid.

Despite struggling to start the season on the front foot, the Milton-Keynes outfit has taken charge after the Australian GP. Ferrari is their nearest challenger, with Mercedes closely behind them. According to Helmut Marko, the gap between the top three and the rest has increased both in terms of pace and points on the table.

Speaking to Motorsport-Total, Marko said, “The speed that Ferrari and we presented is already impressive. I mean, half the grid is one and a half seconds behind and all the rule changes that should have changed everything didn’t really do anything about it.” (Translated via Google Translate)

This season has arguably seen plenty of overtaking action, especially by the likes of Red Bull and Ferrari. However, Marko’s point still stands. The gap between first-placed Red Bull and fourth-placed McLaren is over 200 points already.

Further, only Lando Norris finished on the podium, apart from the drivers of the top three teams. However, it is fairly early to judge the results of the new rules. It will be interesting to see how the season develops as races progress.

Helmut Marko shows his confidence in team Red Bull

Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez have been in impressive form over the past few races. After another 1-2 in Baku, the Dutchman leads the standings with Perez behind him. Moreover, it is the first time since 2011 that the Bulls drivers have taken a 1-2 in the standings.

Marko is pleased with the recent results. He stated, “We said that Baku and Canada should be clues that suit us. This was confirmed in Baku. Six wins in eight races, we’ve never had that before in the first half of the season.”

Canada is another track that could suit the Milton-Keynes team. Like Baku, the circuit has long and high-speed straights. So, the Austrian is hoping that the drivers can carry this momentum.

“That is why we are now optimistic and we continue with a maximum in all areas: rider, team, also Honda with the engine, because we have just released the new engines. So everything speaks in favor of us being able to expand our successful trajectory,” he added.

Fortunes are swinging in Red Bull’s direction. Amid Ferrari’s issues, they will look to capitalize and steer clear in the race for the championship.
