For Red Bull, everything has gone according to plan in 2022, despite the initial woes. Ever since the Milton Keynes outfit picked up the pace, nobody has come close. However, after winning the championship early, there might be some slack creeping in and Lewis Hamilton is thankful for that.

The champions of the world are also champions of pitstops who have executed them flawlessly until the US Grand Prix. We all saw Max Verstappen’s botched pitstop, which eventually did not matter, in the US Grand Prix. The same scenario arose in Mexico as Sergio Perez’s pitstop was 5 seconds long.

The lengthy pit stop took away the opportunity of an undercut on Hamilton, effectively sealing his P2 finish. Anything but flawless at Red Bull is unacceptable. According to the boss, Christian Horner, there will be an investigation regarding the botched pitstops.

“I think without the issue of the pitstop, I think Checo [Perez] would have got the jump on Lewis,” Horner told reporters. “We need to investigate what caused that. It looks like the nut actually stuck, or it wouldn’t undo cleanly.”

This persistent approach towards brilliance despite winning it all is what propelled Red Bull to the top in the current season. We can be certain the team will look into the two successive, uncharacteristically slow pitstops.

Especially the second pitstop, if done flawlessly, the team could’ve easily secured P2 with Mercedes’s strange tire strategy.

Hamilton is fighting tooth, and nail to maintain his record of a race win in every season competed. What seemed to be a far-off possibility could’ve been a reality in the last couple of races. However, Mercedes’s conservative approach to the race cost them, Horner believes.

“We were quite surprised Mercedes went as conservative as they did with the medium/hard strategy,” he said after the Mexican GP. “That’s the second weekend in a row they’ve put that tyre on and it’s cost them a victory. I was quite surprised at that.”
