Toto Wolff has been at the helm of Mercedes at its most dominant time. The turbo-hybrid era of Formula 1 will always be stamped with the badge of the Silver Arrows. That being said, the Austrian has probably accepted that as all good things come to an end, their dominance, too, has.

Mercedes’ firm grasp on the Constructors’ Championship finally came to an end at the 2022 United States Grand Prix. And as it would appear, Toto Wolff has finally accepted defeat. The W13 has not been kind to them, and this has led the boss of the Silver Arrows to proclaim that their glory now lies only in the past.

While appearing at the WebSummit, Wolff spoke candidly about how Mercedes have dropped the ball in 2022. He began by reminiscing, “We won the championship eight times in a row.” This was greeted with much applause by the audience present.

But he then ended the whole thing on a very grim note. “… but that’s the past.”

Even though Mercedes have not been able to challenge the top 2 this season, their up turn in pace in the middle part of the season has been promising. Now, Wolff has come out with exactly what they expect from the final two races of the season.

Mercedes did not start the season as per the plan. However, as the season progressed, they did make some amends to the spiteful W13. As things stand, with Ferrari also dropping the ball, the Silver Arrows have a chance to fight for P2 in the Constructors’.

Wolff said this about the last two races, “Our goals are still to win a race and fight for second in the constructors’ championship. We want to demonstrate that our car is fast and the whole team put just so much work into upgrading the car, it would be fantastic for them if we can make it happen for one of the last two remaining races this year.”
