The fastest lap of a Grand Prix gets a driver a single point if he finishes in the top ten. When he was leading the race at in Monaco, Max Verstappen had his eye on that one extra point that could help him in the standings. However, when he asked his team who had set the quickest lap, Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko told him to forget about it and concentrate on the race, as he was being chased by Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz.
Verstappen had an amazing qualifying session on Saturday only missing out on it because Charles Leclerc crashed after setting the fastest lap. On race day, Leclerc couldn’t participate as there were issues with his gearbox. Hence, this gave the perfect opportunity to the Dutchmen to grab a win.

The Red Bull prodigy did exactly that, leading the pack of drivers from start to finish around the streets of Monte Carlo. The win at Monaco gave him the points that he needed to lead in the fight for the title.
Marko told Max Verstappen to forget about the fastest lap
Speaking to Sky Sports Germany, as quoted by Autosport, Marko said, “He has certainly reached a different level of maturity. We kept him on his toes with fuel modes and such. He had to understand quite a lot.
“When he started asking who had the fastest lap and with what time, we immediately blocked him and told him: ‘Forget all that!”
Can the Dutchmen take the fight to Lewis Hamilton?
This season, Verstappen has shown that he has what it takes to put up a challenge to the seven-time world champion. The two have been neck-on-neck ever since the season kicked off in Bahrain.
As it stands, Max leads the championship table with 105 points, the first time in his career, while Hamilton has fallen down to second place with 101. The Mercedes driver would look to close the gap and reclaim the lead in the upcoming race.

As we prepare for the next round of the season, which takes place in the streets of Baku, Verstappen will aim for another win while Hamilton would hope to learn from his mistakes at Monaco and redeem himself at Azerbaijan.
