In May ’23, Antonio drew a fascinating parallel. He likened the burgeoning rivalry between his son, Sergio, and teammate Max Verstappen to the legendary F1 saga of Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna. With Red Bull emerging as the forerunner this season and both drivers clinching all five races until May, it’s a timely comparison. “This is the same thing. Today we are living it again. They are two tigers in the same cage,” Antonio enthused to Mexican media outlet Esto. Just as Prost and Senna vied for dominance in the late ’80s. Oh, the support. It’s delightful to think that behind every racing great, there’s a proud parent waving a flag, and in Perez’s case, it’s the ever-jubilant Antonio!

Here’s some Guadalajara nostalgia for you. Back in Mexico, his childhood was packed with races around the country, zooming about with his dad and brother. They’d often clock in mammoth drives post-race, and our hero would tumble into school just in the nick of time. From those curious looks in the paddock, today, he’s a face everyone recognizes.

Antonio Perez Garibay: A man of many hats!

Back in the 1980s, Antonio kick-started his professional journey with a humble shop in Mexico City. Fast forward a few decades, and he’s now riding the wave as a prosperous businessman. Talk about retail therapy! And, not one to rest on his laurels, Antonio took a detour into the political circuit. He went full-throttle, aiming for the Guadalajara Mayor’s seat in 2015. Though the mayoral trophy eluded him, he didn’t hit the brakes and ran for Senator with Morena in 2018.

But before the bustling business and political pursuits, our man Antonio was tearing up the tarmac as a racecar driver. The racing bug bit him hard! No wonder Sergio caught it too. Beyond his own racing days, Antonio played the pit boss, managing other racers’ careers as recently as 2021.
