Red Bull‘s dominance in the 2023 season has been largely attributed to Adrian Newey and his team’s wonderfully designed RB-19. While it is true that Adrian Newey led the team that designed the championship-winning car, that’s not the only responsibility that the Red Bull CTO is charged with.
In fact, Adrian Newey’s focus has gone beyond Red Bull’s F1 division, meaning only a part of his time goes towards directing the F1 division of the team. Despite this “part-time” role, however, Adrian Newey plays an extremely important role in the Austrian team.

The partnership between Red Bull’s Technical Director Pierre Waché, and master designer Adrian Newey, has been a cornerstone of the team’s triumphs. In a recent interview with FORMULE 1 Magazine, Waché shed light on the evolving dynamics of their collaboration and the profound influence Newey continues to exert on Red Bull’s success.
Waché, often described as the silent force behind Red Bull Racing, expressed his gratitude for the privilege of working closely with Adrian Newey. He acknowledged that without Newey’s invitation in 2013, he might not have joined the team. “Without him, I wouldn’t have been at Red Bull. He’s the man who brought me here. Since my arrival, I have learned a tremendous amount from him. The way we collaborate evolves each year. He is no longer working entirely on the F1 project, which means I have more space,” the Technical Director reveals.
The Frenchman spoke highly of Newey’s competitiveness and relentless pursuit of excellence, stating, “Adrian is a very competitive person. He never gives up. In many ways, he is an inspiration for me. His motivation and dedication are impressive, especially considering what he has already achieved. He always challenges you to think about what can be even better.”
This spirit of competitiveness is pervasive throughout the team, and it perhaps starts at the top. The leadership team of Christian Horner and Helmut Marko, or even the Gianpiero Lambiase – Max Verstappen, are pristine examples of how competitiveness shapes the culture at Red Bull.
Competitiveness is the key to Red Bull’s success
Just like others on the team, Pierre Waché is also extremely competitive. Unfortunately, this has meant that the French director loses sleep on both great and bad races likewise.

The intensity of their work, combined with a highly competitive environment, keeps their minds occupied even in the dead of night. Waché emphasized that, for the team’s technical staff, the job is not merely a profession but a form of elite sportsmanship. He remarked, “We are not drivers, but for us, this work is also a top sport.”
The technical director revealed the constant mental engagement required in his role, stating, “This work takes up a significant part of your life. It is always in my head, especially because I work with a very good team. We always challenge each other. The consequence is that you still lie awake at night thinking about things that have been said”
