Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen are arguably two of the greatest drivers on the current F1 grid with a combined 9 championships and 149 wins. Wherever there’s competition, there is going to be a debate about who’s the greatest. So has been the case with Hamilton and Verstappen, especially after the 2021 season. However, in a recent comparison between eras of dominance, Max Verstappen came out on top, Hamilton was humiliated and the harsh truth was exposed. What was it?

With a record-equaling 7 titles to his name, Lewis Hamilton can be named as the most accomplished F1 driver. The turbo-hybrid era from the mid-late 2010s can very well be called the Hamilton-Mercedes era. The Brit showcased domination like never before. However, the 2020 Mercedes W11 was on a different level, with performance and dominance that was never heard of before. Despite that, it was Max Verstappen’s dominance that came out on top.

During a recent podcast, Max Verstappen’s dominance was talked about. As the hosts discussed his dominance, one of them advised how it isn’t solely down to the car. Taking the example of Hamilton and the W11 from 2020, it was advised how despite such a dominant car, Hamilton’s dominance didn’t even come close to what Verstappen is showcasing.

According to the Sky Sports F1 podcast, the host said, “You can watch races from that season[2020], where the whole field is lapped by Mercedes and there’s one driver who’s not and that’s Max, and somehow he would challenge Bottas. Sometimes he’d even beat Hamilton. It did make you wonder how good this guy is going to be if he got a car that good. And we’re seeing it play out exactly right now. Because so far, if it carries on, it’ll be the greatest season ever in F1 because he’s had 2 second places and won everything else.”

Lewis Hamilton’s era of dominance was humiliated by the hosts as Max Verstappen’s 2023 season was labeled as the greatest season ever in F1. Max Verstappen’s pace compared to Checo also tells how it’s not just the car but the drivers as well. However, Charles Leclerc was left puzzled by the teammate situation at Red Bull.

Lewis Hamilton has almost always edged out his teammate every season except for the 2016 season. But the gap has never been like what it is between Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez. It seems as if the Dutchman is driving a different car altogether. Even Charles Leclerc was left in a jiffy and he wasn’t able to figure out why. However, he did advise that Verstappen is an exceptional driver and a difficult teammate for Checo.

According to it.motorsport.com, Charles Leclerc said, “Personally I think it is impossible to read the situation well from the outside, only within the team they know exactly everything. Sometimes the margin between Max and Checo was higher than I would have expected, but on the other hand Verstappen is an incredible driver and it is probably very difficult to be by his side. But, I repeat, I don’t have the full view of the situation.” [Translated Via Google]
