The list of things that adds to the desire to leave the sport early keeps on growing every day for Max Verstappen. The Dutchman is on top of the F1 world, yet he is always talking about retirement and it’s all thanks to the constant changes being made by the governing body or the owners in a bid to make the sport more exciting and entertaining. Recently the Red Bull man bemoaned the result of this exact approach, which has now got backing from an F1 legend in a recent interview.
Luca Cordero di Montezemolo, the former chairperson of Ferrari, is a legend of the sport and was part of the Italian team during their most dominant period in recent history. The former boss recently made an appearance at the 58th edition of the Caschi d’Oro as a guest. He made a statement to the press, dismissing the growing number of street circuits in the circus, which inadvertently backed Verstappen’s claims.

The Italian boss is old school and back in the day, most of the tracks were classic tracks made purely for racing. Street tracks have gained popularity in recent years for their added spectacle. However, the modern F1 cars are much wider, which makes narrow street circuits all the more challenging to overtake, the main criticism of Moncao. This is exactly what Montezemolo expressed in his interview during the event, as quoted by Formula Passion.
“I like the current F1 I like everything except the excessive attention to the street circuits (there will be 8 out of 24 in 2024 ed. ), the street circuits are good, but you shouldn’t exaggerate,” said the Ferrari legend.
Montezemolo automatically sided with Verstappen when he made this statement about the street circuits. As in the past, the Dutchman has admitted, “Of course, F1 has to make money and try to make the sport more popular, but it’s also important that the right tracks stay on the calendar and that we don’t just race on street circuits or in cities. In the end, these F1 cars are not made for that.”
Perhaps this is why the Red Bull man talks about his retirement as often as he does. The constant changes in the sport will surely drive him out and now we even have a timeline.
Max Verstappen shockingly sets a timeline on his F1 career
The 26-year-old is on top of the F1 world with three championships in as many years and multiple records tumbling down in front of him. The most dominant driver in the sport’s history would want to continue his reign for as long as he can. However, not Verstappen. After threatening retirement on multiple occasions on account of various factors and changes, he recently gave a deadline on his F1 career.
