Max Verstappen, coming off his euphoric win at the 2023 US Grand Prix, was greeted not by the usual cheers, but by a cacophony of boos during the podium celebrations. Addressing the issue head-on, the Red Bull Racing driver shared his thoughts at the press conference ahead of the Mexican GP.

The Formula 1 world champion expressed his dismay at fans who overshadowed a significant moment. Speaking to Sky Sports, the Dutch champion reflected on a universal phenomenon in sports. He expressed his keenness to uphold the very ethos of sporting culture – one that is based on mutual respect.

The Dutch driver, always known for his straightforwardness, brought to light a topic that is indeed resonating across various sporting disciplines. The essence of his words was clear: love the sport, cheer for your favorites, but remember that respect for all is paramount.

Verstappen said, “Of course, I think it’s always good to support your favorite driver, but also have respect for others in particular places, you know.” His reference to the national anthem moment at the US Grand Prix underlines the importance of sportsmanship and respect in the sporting community. “While being on the podium when the national anthem is being sung or played, I think it’s always quite disrespectful when you start chanting through these kind of, you know, moments,” Verstappen added.

It’s worth noting that crowds booing isn’t just a concern limited to Formula 1. Verstappen was quick to point out the larger context, emphasizing, “And that’s why I think it’s good that they are raising awareness because it’s not only our sport. There’s a lot of different sports where people are trying to raise this kind of awareness.”

As the Mexican GP weekend unfolds, one can only hope that fans remember the real spirit of the sport and come together to celebrate the speed, skill, and spectacle that is Formula 1. However, hot on the heels of his landmark 50th Formula 1 win, Verstappen is already focusing on his next challenge – which is all set to be a slippery slope if caution is not exercised.

Verstappen eyes Mexican GP victory

While Verstappen is used to the twists and turns of various circuits, Mexico’s Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez is throwing in a wildcard that even the seasoned champ is wary of. Situated at a lofty 2,238 m above sea level, the Mexican track holds the distinction of being the highest on the F1 calendar. And with great height comes less aerodynamic grip. That’s right! The thinner air up there means cars don’t hug the track quite as tightly. This tiny fact hasn’t escaped Verstappen’s notice.

Speaking of the unique challenges, Verstappen remarked, “That will have an influence on the cars. But for the time being, the RB19 is faultless in almost most circumstances. Considering the race in Austin, this Grand Prix will be a battle again.” While the altitude might pose a hiccup, Verstappen isn’t one to back down. He’s banking on Red Bull’s strategic prowess to give him an edge. “Strategy is our strong suit,” he pointed out confidently.
