Max Verstappen won the Dutch GP after passing every hurdle that was thrown his way. It was Verstappen’s third win at his home race and 9th straight win as he equaled Sebastian Vettel’s record. After many races, we also saw Verstappen’s girlfriend Kelly Piquet in the paddock to support the Dutchman. It makes sense for Kelly to be present at Verstappen’s home race. However, despite a picture-perfect Dutch GP for Verstappen, Kelly Piquet sarcastically thanked Alonso for ruining it. What did Fernando Alonso do?

The Dutch GP was massively affected by the rain showers. It was almost like the typical British weather, when the rain comes unannounced and then goes away within minutes. Yet Max Verstappen braved through all the weather transitions, safety cars, and the Red Flag to come home and take the victory.

Coming back to how Fernando Alonso ruined the picture-perfect Dutch GP. No, Alonso didn’t do a Norris and break Verstappen’s trophy. Although he was pointing towards it on the podium, the champagne shower from Alonso’s side drenched Kelly Piquet standing down in the pitlane as the champagne ceremony took place.

Kelly Piquet uploaded a story on Instagram where the podium celebrations can be seen as Alonso sprays the champagne down towards Verstappen’s GF. The caption to the story was, “I escaped the rain but not the Champagne. Thank you @fernandoalo_oficial.” Despite the heavy rains, Kelly Piquet wasn’t drenched as she was in the garage. But thanks to Alonso, she was later drenched in Champagne.

Although, that wasn’t the only way Alonso ruined Verstappen’s Dutch GP. Let’s look at the other instance where Alonso was so close to ruining Verstappen’s party.

“I cannot exit”: Fernando Alonso on overtaking Max Verstappen at the restart.

Amid the heavy rain, with 10 laps remaining, Zhou crashed into a barrier. The accident, coupled with the rain, brought out a red flag. With a rolling restart, and only five laps under the green flag, things could’ve turned either way for Max Verstappen. Fernando Alonso, who was behind the Dutchman, had a great restart and was on Verstappen’s gearbox.

After the race, Alonso explained how he thought about overtaking Verstappen, but then recalled that he had to leave the track in order to reach home. One can only imagine the scene if Alonso had taken the win off Verstappen’s hand. During the post-race interview, Alonso said, “I did think about trying a move in the last restart but then I thought, maybe I cannot exit the circuit.”

During the post-race press conference, he said, “I was thinking about trying. So I was not conservative, let’s say! I thought about what to do, a lot, in the red flag period. So I thought, what were the possibilities, obviously, the move into Turn 2 was something that was in my head, also into Turn 1. I discussed it with the team as well. That was my feeling, that I wanted to try today. But obviously, I don’t want to compromise any big points for the team, because second was very important as well.”

So yeah, at the restart, I tried in Turn 4 launching the lap, trying to be flat in the banking with the cold tires, which is a little bit risky, and tried to be side-by-side at least into Turn 1 but I was not that close. So after that, I tried some different lines—inside, outside—the opposite of Max for the first lap, in case one of the lines was very grippy or much grippier than he is. And yeah, it was close, but not enough.”
