There is no denying it. Lewis Hamilton‘s move to Ferrari has turned the F1 world upside down. It was perhaps more surprising because he chose to join the Italian team soon after extending his contract with Mercedes even without getting his hands on the W15. Hamilton did not need any track time or a single race to make perhaps the biggest decision of his career. This is exactly why Red Bull‘s advisor Helmut Marko believes the Brit knows something we don’t.
Marko has been a part of the grid for a lifetime. His expertise in the world of F1 is unparalleled and hardly anything goes by him. So despite initially sharing his opinion on why Hamilton switched sides, he changed his verdict back to confusion about the decision. It’s either that or Hamilton has a secret up his sleeve and has extraordinary intuition. This is what Marko fears, which he expressed in an interview while discussing the Hamilton-Ferrari saga, as quoted by Formula Passion.

“For me too it was an absolute surprise, something sportingly astonishing, especially for the timing. One wonders how this could have happened. Mercedes was overtaken by Ferrari in the second half of 2023, and McLaren was also faster. Maybe Hamilton has understood something that the outside world still doesn’t know,” said Marko.

Moreover, this news has shocked the Red Bull star man and Marko’s favorite as well. The Brit truly caught everyone off guard with his decision and now he’s made Mercedes weaker.
Helmut Marko believes Mercedes has gotten weaker because of Lewis Hamilton’s decision
We are all aware of how the entire Mercedes team was scrambling after the Hamilton news surfaced. The team was in a frenzy and Toto Wolff addressed his team remotely showcasing how unaware the Brackley outfit was of Hamilton’s decision. They have now shifted their focus to securing a replacement for 2025.
However, according to Marko, no matter who that would be, Mercedes has gotten weaker.

“Nothing changes for us, except that Mercedes is weakening, while it remains to be seen whether Ferrari will strengthen. Overall, it has an incredible effect, which will also have consequences on stock prices,” said Marko.
He also confessed this scenario is more entertaining than anything Netflix has ever produced but this still leaves Mercedes at a disadvantage. He added, “For sports, it’s a great thing, it’s better than Netflix! Even if Mercedes cannot afford to share the most important innovations with him, he would naturally take them with him to Ferrari.”
