Ever since the start of the ground-effect cars, Red Bull has pulled ahead of the competition so far ahead that rivals are content with just sharing the podium with them. The man behind this unprecedented success is the walking legend, their CTO, Adrian Newey. Newey joined the team from McLaren back in 2006. Ever since then, he has been part of the group that has developed every single championship-winning car the Milton-Keynes team has had. For all the feats he has achieved, he has earned many compliments. But never would he have in his wildest imaginations expected to be compared with an iconic movie character that left viewers dumbstruck.
Last year, owing to the wind tunnel penalty imposed following the cost cap breach, many expected Red Bull to fall down the pecking order. Their own team principal, Christian Horner, predicted his team to be several-tenths of a second slower. The reality turned out to be far from the predictions, though. The Austrian team continues to dominate the grid. Some would say far more than last year.

Complimenting Newey’s genius, co-host Sam in a recent episode of Late Braking F1 Podcast said, “You know in Men in Black II when the guy opens up and it’s that tiny little alien controlling that entire man. He’s really tired. If you hold up your mobile phone, he’s that big. But he’s inside of a human being. I wonder if that’s what’s in Adrian Newey. This being, from a billion years in the future, is just working on aerodynamic genius because he’s got stuck on Earth. That’s what it’s like. He’s so bloody clever. It’s not fair.”
While Horner believed that his team will suffer because of cost cap penalties, Newey took a stable approach.
Does Adrian Newey find Mercedes’ concept interesting enough to jump ship?

As the current season began, many found the Red Bull CTO checking the W14 with a keen eye. Whether it is a concept that he finds interesting or challenging, only he knows. But if former F1 champ Damon Hill is to be believed, it is good enough to make the engineer extraordinaire jump ship to the rivals.
In a recent episode of the VF1 Show, Vincenzo Landino said, “It sounded like Damon [Hill] was very adamant about the idea that Adrian Newey could go to Mercedes. The quote that I saw from podcast was, ‘I can’t help ignoring this thing he did in Bahrain where he stood in front of the Mercedes on the grid with his clipboard and stood there for a long time looking at their front wings’.”

Landino, however, felt that the assumption was a figment of Damon’s imagination. One that he, like everyone else, is free to cook.
