Against all odds, in 2022, Ferrari turned up with a car that left everyone by surprise. That was because it was Red Bull and Mercedes who were expected to slug it out once again, resuming their rivalry from a year before. However, two wins from the first three fixtures by Charles Leclerc set Ferrari up for a season where it was for them to lose. And that is precisely what happened. Not only did Red Bull develop a car that brought home both championships, the Prancing Horse just ran out of steam after a point. Moreover, their strategy did not do them any favor, often leaving them embarrassed. In the latest season of Drive to Survive, a segment showed how the then-team principal Mattia Binotto continued to live in denial through all of it. That attitude, however, hasn’t gone down too well for Leclerc fans.
The tire change strategy at Monaco was a royal disaster for the red team. The team radio revealed just how frustrated Leclerc had grown with such unplanned calls. However, that was not going to be the last time he would be left shaking his head. The Monegasque saw his entire season go down to some questionable calls. Later, while summing up his experience throughout the season, he did not have many appreciating words for his team.

In the DTS episode that focused on Ferrari’s strategic fails, we see Binotto having a conversation where he feels the call to double stack Leclerc behind Carlos Sainz for a tire change in Monaco was the right decision. Later, even Christian Horner criticizes the call in a conversation with F1 boss Stefano Domenicali.
Have a look at how fans reacted to Binotto’s attitude to the whole situation.
Bring back Binotto! He is a Red Bull legend

He is so shameless.

As the British GP progressed towards Lap 39 behind the safety car, Ferrari decided to only bring Sainz in for a tire change while keeping Leclerc out on older tires. That move to undercut Lewis Hamilton backfired as the Monegasque eventually missed out on a podium while his teammate registered his first race win.
Yeah, that race was a disaster… 💀
Hopefully we won't see any more Silverstones 2022 this year 😖🤞🏻

No wonder they fired him. Even their own rivals did not understand what they did to Charles that day. We will see this season, hopefully Charles finds more support from the team, if not he will leave and that is understandable.

Some believed Leclerc would be justified in his actions if he decided to switch to another team once his contract expires if Ferrari continues to treat him the way Binotto did in ’22.
Heartbreaking to watch and a complete betrayal of our team’s top driver. If Leclerc ends up leaving in 2024 the team only have themselves to blame as they’ve both wasted Charles’s talent and damaged any good feelings between him and leadership. I hope we can turn it around.

It's ok to make mistakes but not ok to be too stubborn to admit them or to learn from them.

Another fan lauded Ferrari management’s decision to let Binotto go.
Always knew he needed to go. Too many errors last season. Errors in strategy, and poor development of the car through the season. Glad the decision was made. Be interesting seeing how Fred does going forward.

In honesty. Mattia deserved the sacking as team principal, maybe another position in-house would gave been fine. but he failed as team principal and was always in denial. https://t.co/B6aXi1etPG

Yeah, this guy lacked common sense. They fired him too late, he should’ve been gone after that race. https://t.co/utEqV7KDbG

Watch This Story: Ferrari Strategy Fails We Will Never Forget
Pretty damning of Binotto's leadership there. That clip alone is enough for me to see he is not the man to lead a championship battle regardless of how great his engineering may have been. Either too stubborn or just oblivious.

The Prancing Horse’s reins are in Frederic Vasseur’s hands now. Would be interesting to see how many such errors he is able to iron out in his first season with the team.
