In a race that had us all gripping our armrests, the 2023 F1 US GP sprint was nothing short of exhilarating! Max Verstappen managed to nudge out Charles Leclerc in a nerve-wracking uphill run to Turn 1, making sure to protect his pole advantage. In what could’ve been a fairy-tale turn for Leclerc, Lewis Hamilton smoothly snuck past him at the exit of the first corner. Our dear Charles might have seen his chances of leading diminish, but he did provide the drama and suspense we all so desperately craved. Hamilton, playing his part, kept Verstappen in his sights, but Max eventually pulled away, finishing with a whopping lead of over 9 seconds.
Clearly, Hamilton’s rearview mirror was playing tricks on him as Verstappen transformed into a mere dot in the distance. Leclerc, however, is not one to be left behind in providing juicy comments. After the race, he shed light on his ambitious (and slightly thwarted) attack on Verstappen, mentioning, “There was an opportunity, there was a gap and I tried.” Well, A for effort, Charles! But…

It was Verstappen who had the last laugh – or should we say, the last sly comment? Reflecting on the race, he cheekily noted, “It was quite tight, but luckily there was a lot of space into turn 1. Then we could control our race, and push a bit more. It was always about 8 or 9 tenths but all controllable. I think the pace of the car was very good today.” Ah, Max, ever the subtle jester!

Leclerc looked a bit off the pace as Hamilton & Verstappen cleared off in the distance. The Monegasque stated after the sprint that he couldn’t see the Mercedes car, such was the pace difference. Perhaps the Mercedes floor upgrade is working well for at least Hamilton’s W14. After the start at Turn 1, Leclerc didn’t have much to fight on as he finished the race in 3rd, but does that mean the pole-sitter for the Grand Prix will have one hand tied back in the 56-lap affair at COTA?
As the dust settles, all eyes will be on the Grand Prix, and with the extra data Ferrari has bagged, who knows what twists and turns await us? Till then, hats off to Max for a race well-driven and a masterclass in passive-aggressive commentary. On to Sunday! For Sunday’s race, Lewis Hamilton is hinting that Max Verstappen is the guy to watch out for!

Despite Verstappen’s starting position from a modest sixth, Hamilton believes that the leading cars will be on their toes to keep the Red Bull speedster at bay.

In a show of pure racing flair, he stormed to victory on the sprint day, leaving Hamilton to say, “He’s got at least half a second on the rest, so watch out!” But Max isn’t resting on his laurels. While optimistic about his car’s performance, he acknowledges the challenges ahead, especially when zooming past those high-speed corners with tire degradation in play. “It’s not going to be a cakewalk,” he suggests.
So, what’s the Sunday line-up looking like? Ferrari’s young gun, Charles Leclerc, is leading the pack on pole, flanked by McLaren’s rising star, Lando Norris, and none other than Hamilton himself. Verstappen, though in the sixth spot, promises a thrilling chase.
