The 2022 Azerbaijan Grand Prix is underway and we have our first real talking point from the weekend. It looks like the DRS issue for Max Verstappen and his car has carried on from Barcelona to Baku.

It was quite evident to see the DRS wing on the world champion’s car flexing on the long straight at the circuit. So it was just a matter of time before other teams on the grid started to question the Flexi wing on Verstappen’s car.

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner in his post-FP1 with Sky Sports hinted that Verstappen’s car might need changes. “We’ve seen it [DRS issue] and we’ve got data from it, and we’ve got a comparison from Sergio’s wing.”

“It always seems to be on Max’s car for some reason. So, we need to get on top of it. We understood the issues in Barcelona and hopefully we can tune it out,” further said Horner.

It would be interesting to see if the problem causes a headache for the team and the driver this weekend. Verstappen faced an issue related to DRS in Barcelona as well just recently.

Should Max Verstappen and Red Bull be concerned?

The Dutch driver was very frustrated in Barcelona when his DRS was not working properly. This was the first time this season that we saw a glimpse of the iconic rants of ‘Mad Max’. But Red Bull Chief Engineer Paul Monaghan revealed the DRS issue in Spain was self-inflicted and that they have resolved it.

“Our DRS problem was self-inflicted, I think, if we are honest, so now we’ve learned our rather painful lessons. There is a sigh of relief after the work that some very clever people did, the research and the checks. They did a phenomenal job in a very short period of time.”

“The challenge has changed from circuit to circuit, the wait time changes, the speed of opening changes, and the conditions change. I’m confident, and much happier based upon what we learned coming out of Spain,” said Monaghan.
