The world heard the angry roar of the Dutch Lion as Red Bull asked their star driver to abort his qualifying lap. Max Verstappen could have potentially been on pole position for the Singapore GP. Instead, he’ll now start the race in P8. He was visibly furious at his team’s decision to call him into the pits at the dying stages of the final qualifying.

Red Bull team, including boss Christian Horner, faced the fury of Verstappen as he stormed off the circuit after the qualifying. The Dutchman also skipped the Red Bull team debrief in what was a rare blunder from the Milton-Keynes-based team.

Although one might expect the team boss to be mad at the driver in such a situation, after the session, Christian Horner took full responsibility for the incident as he explained what happened with Max Verstappen.

Talking to Sky Sports F1, Horner said“Huge frustration with Max, he was on a lap that was a second-and-a-half up, I think, on what the pole [time] was.”

Furthermore, he added, “So it was our mistake. Basically, with the track ramping up we assumed five laps would be the maximum we could do, and we actually managed to get to a position where we won ourselves a sixth lap.”

Had Verstappen not aborted his last lap, they wouldn’t have had enough fuel to present to the FIA for the test, and Max would have had to start from the back of the grid. However, Max will be looking to put behind Saturday’s farce.

Max Verstappen criticizes Red Bull for the qualifying blunder

The World Champion was not a happy man, as Saturday’s qualifying session ended in disaster. Max Verstappen has opened up about how he felt in the aftermath of Q3. After a near-perfect season, Max could not believe that RBR had committed such a blunder.

Verstappen said“We got a little bit surprised that we had that extra lap, but you can track that, you see it coming, That’s why I don’t really understand how it was missed, and, of course, in hindsight, they should have let me finish the lap before where they told me to abort already to make a gap for the last lap.”

However, Max was pretty happy with how the car was driving in the slicks. Although the frustration of not completing the qualifying was still there.

Max concluded, “Of course, the conditions are tricky, but I liked that. The car was working quite well.”
