Formula 1 travels to the iconic Spa-Francorchamps for the Belgian Grand Prix this weekend. While the race always evokes a sense of excitement and speed, it also does remind us of tragedy. While certain complexes of the track have been exhilarating to witness for drivers and fans alike, sometimes, the level of safety the sport has garnered is left pale in comparison to the challenges the track throws up. And Charles Leclerc is fearful of this very thing.
One such instance is the fan-favorite Eau Rouge and Raidillon section in the first sector. Whilst it is no doubt a jaw-dropping experience to drive through it in a current-gen F1 car, the rise up the hill is a blind one and hence, can be a recipe for disaster and fatal catastrophes.

Add the weather predictions to this potent yet dangerous track, and Ferrari man Charles Leclerc isn’t too sure about the sanctity of the event. One big topic of discussion has always been the question of visibility when it rains. And while Leclerc wouldn’t want a sequel to the infamous 2021 GP, he surely doesn’t want a re-run of Anthoine Hubert’s agonizing death.
Leclerc was quoted by MotorsportWeek.com as saying, “We are not exaggerating when we say we don’t see anything, we really don’t see anything when it’s raining. This is a really big problem for Formula 1, for motorsport in general. Any single seaters, we have quite a bit of downforce and there is quite a lot of spray and then this causes quite a lot of incidents because we cannot react to what is in front.”
While Leclerc is pushing for more, Lewis Hamilton has already placed his full trust in the FIA.

The Spa-Francorchamps circuit has become contentious for the number of devastating incidents the track has witnessed in a short span of years. The latest is the unfortunate demise of Dilano van ‘t Hoff. However, 7x champion, Lewis Hamilton believes that the FIA is adept in ensuring the safety of the drivers this weekend.
He was quoted by GPBlog.com as saying, “It’s not something I ever think of, I think as a driver it’s not something that you can ever really let into your mind, but trust in what the FIA are doing, I don’t think we’ll be here, if they didn’t think that we’d be safe and I believe that, again, trust in them as they’ve done such incredible work over the past couple of decades, I trust in them to make the right decisions moving forwards also.”
