Schumacher Scorns at Lewis Hamilton & Sebastian Vettel’s Bold FIA Protests: “All a Bit Childish”

The Race Director’s notes for the Miami Grand Prix caused quite a furor among drivers and fans. While Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel have openly defied the rules, former F1 driver Ralf Schumacher isn’t too amused. 

As per the pre-race notes, drivers aren’t allowed to wear jewelry while in the car. In addition, drivers will also have to ensure they are wearing fire-redundant underwear. While this episode started in Australia when new Race Director Neils Wittich issued the jewelry ban, it seems like the heat has turned up in Miami. 

Lewis and Sebastian take digs at the FIA

Lewis Hamilton took a strong stance on the issue by arriving for the press conference wearing three watches and eight rings. Sebastian Vettel took a dig at the underwear rule by wearing one outside his race suit.

Many looked at the funny side of things as the two drivers made their ground very clear. However, Vettel’s german compatriot Ralf Schumacher wasn’t too bemused by the acts of both the drivers.

Speaking to Sky Deutschland he said, “I find it all a bit childish, to be honest,” and added they “should actually be in favor because it’s about safety”.

The main point of Ralf’s argument is that both the drivers should be setting an example for the young drivers of the sport. “The drivers who drive Formula 3 and Formula 4 should know the big ones stick to it,” he said.

He also added, “And above all it’s about their own safety and that it’s actually a ridiculous thing that such experienced people who have seen so many accidents make fun of it in that way.”

At the press conference itself, drivers were supporting Hamilton’s stance. Pierre Gasly said while he appreciated that the FIA’s concern for safety, but he thinks that there are bigger things to focus on. He said, “I do feel it is a little bit personal. We should have the freedom to do what feels rights.”

The Mercedes driver also said that if the FIA wants him to sign a waiver, then shall do and ease the responsibility on FIA’s part. “If they stop me, so be it. We have a spare driver, so we are ready and prepared for the weekend,” Lewis added. “There’s lots to do in the city anyway so I’ll be good either way.”

In the end, Lewis thinks this is could start an unnecessary spat but also it is a step backward.
