Not one, not two, but 16 years of consistently being on top of their game is an achievement not many athletes can credit themselves with. Sadly, having failed to do so in 2022, Lewis Hamilton cannot either. The Brit has been on a downward trajectory after the draining 2021 heavyweight bout that he narrowly lost out on. However, despite the heartache of almost becoming the greatest champion the sport has ever seen, the Brit is keeping his head down and working towards his dream. How does he do that? Hamilton revealed that in the Thursday drivers briefing ahead of the Saudi Arabian GP.
Having suffered the statically worst season ever in his career, Hamilton started the 2023 season with renewed hope. However, the state of the W14 is not far from its predecessor. To make things worse, Mercedes has fallen down a place in the pecking order on the grid. This is unfamiliar territory for Hamilton, especially after his years of domination in the sport. Despite that, the Brit revealed to the media his mental approach to this challenging part of life in F1 during the Thursday briefing.

“Nothing really, you just redirect your energy. It’s just different. If you’re fighting for a world championship, which is what you prepare for at the beginning of the season, you realise that that’s not the case. And then you redirect the energy into building and strengthening the team, supporting everyone in the best way you can. And you continue to prepare the same for the races, in the sense of your fitness and the mental approach,” he revealed.
Hamilton has faced many foes and obstacles during his time in the premier class. This new scenario changes nothing and, apart from his confident approach, he has faith in his team as well.

Hamilton and Mercedes may be down, but they’re not out. The team pulled up their socks and dug deep to find a singular race win in 2022. In 2023, Hamilton has continued faith in his team.
He said, “But everyone’s working on the solution. And I have 100% confidence in everyone just doing their job. You don’t all of a sudden lose the ability to build great cars, it’s just, you know, we’re not where we need to be and where we want to be. And we just got to keep on working on it.”

We are not sure if this faith will translate into results anytime soon, but the Brit is staying optimistic. In fact, his loyalties will also come to test with a contract extension overdue.
