Recently, Racing Point’s boss, Otmar Szafnauer, slammed the Stewards for handing Sergio Perez a reprimand for the hard defense against Pierre Gasly.

On the contrary, the Frenchman revealed that the Racing Point driver deserved a reprimand. Gasly felt that Perez’s move during the race in Portimao “was a bit sketchy.”

Speaking to Sky Sports, Gasly admitted that he was “pissed off” with how the Mexican defended against him in the race. “It was a bit sketchy,” he said. “I don’t know how it looks from the outside. So I need to see the footage.

But the difference of speed at that moment was so big. I was probably 30kph faster than him. I decided to commit on the inside. And he really moved at the last moment.

I jumped on the brakes but I did think, ‘OK, we’re both in the gravel,’ I don’t know how we managed to avoid contact. I was quite pissed off with him. So the next lap I really sent it round the outside which was pretty good.”

It would have been a whole different story had Gasly failed to slam his brakes going into Turn 1. But the AlphaTauri man managed to get the right thing done and avoided a collision with Perez.

Pierre Gasly believes he’s in the form of his life

Gasly felt that he is currently in his best form. He said, “I think it is fair to say that. Obviously with a bit more experience now, I think I manage and approach the weekend in a different way and manage to extract everything a bit more,” he added.

So I think it is fair to say that. There are still many areas to improve. But it is working well. And also the team is doing everything I need to perform so we have a good working relationship.

It was a great race for us. And as I said, we are really strong at the moment. We finished sixth last weekend and fifth this weekend. So honestly, we’ve managed to really extract everything from the car on Sundays.

Also on my side, I feel that I am performing at a very good level,” Gasly said.

Gasly has been showing some serious pace on Sundays, despite failing to be fast enough on Fridays and Saturdays. And his results do reflect on the drivers’ standings. He currently stands in P9, having scored a decent tally of 63 points.

Considering he is just 17 points off Daniel Ricciardo in P4, Gasly could very well finish this season as best of the rest in P4 if he manages to churn out some more Top-5 finishes. Although it is a long shot for the Frenchman, he has the speed to get himself up there.
