Amidst intense speculation that Sergio Perez would challenge for his seat at Williams, incumbent George Russell has moved to quash the rumors. From his end, the Mercedes backed driver believes that the seat is his for the F1 2021 season.
Until a few days back, there was a strong suggestion that Sergio Perez could move to Williams. The financial backing and racing talent that the Mexican brings to the table is hard to ignore.

Despite the change in ownership, George Russell believes that his contract with Williams is all that concerns him. And that having new owners does not necessarily mean a chop and change in drivers.
Russell is quoted as saying, “I’ve actually not spoken to the new owners about it, because from my side there’s no concerns.
“There’ll all be here this weekend, I’m sure any air will be cleared. But I’m not concerned and I’ll be on the grid next year with Williams.”
Heading into the new season, seems like Russell is extremely confident about his seat with Williams. Admittedly, someone like Perez was always going to be a threat to many other racers on the grid.
Russell is constantly in touch with Mercedes
The 22-year-old is part of the Mercedes’ junior drivers’ program. While his racing skills have obviously gotten him this far, he has sufficient backing from the six-time Constructors’ champions.
“I’m in contact with the guys at Mercedes weekly, we’re always staying in touch. I feel in really privileged position to have their full support behind me and long-term I think I’m in a great position.

“It’s understandable there’s speculation. Because there’s so many great drivers who are available fighting for a place on the grid now, with Sergio [Perez], both the Haas guys, [Nico] Hulkenberg as well.
“So there’s always going to be speculation. Unfortunately in Formula 1 there isn’t necessarily always space for everyone who deserves to be here.”

Russell has so far gained no points this season, often spending his races at the back of the grid. But, in a battle with his teammate Nicholas Latifi, Russell has always looked the faster driver in qualifying.
The Briton has occasionally come close to a point finish in a few races, most recently in the Russian Grand Prix. And he will believe performances like that, would be enough for him to retain the Williams seat next year.
