Making content around Formula 1 seems to be working for Netflix. With the streaming platform’s first venture into the F1 world—Drive to Survivestill going strong and currently filming its sixth season, it produced a biopic in 2021 on one of F1’s all-time greats, Michael Schumacher. The documentary, Schumacher, follows the journey of the German’s rise in F1 and how he became one of the most successful drivers in history. And now, Netflix is set to produce a mini-series on Schumacher’s idol growing up and his rival on-track, Ayrton Senna.

In March this year, Netflix announced that it’d be filming a six-part documentary series that “will portray the story of adventure and triumph of the man who became a Brazilian national hero and conquered the world both on and off the Formula 1 track.” The series, which will be filmed in Brazil and Argentina, will feature Brazilian actor Gabriel Leone in the lead role of Ayrton Senna. And to make the series even more authentic, the streaming platform announced another Brazilian actor joining the cast.

English-Brazilian actor Kaya Scodelario, best known for her role in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, took to Instagram to announce the news. She exclaimed, “Being half Brazilian, it has always been a dream of mine to work on a Brazilian Production. It is an honor to be involved in a project that tells the story of Ayrton, a true National hero who means so much to the people of Brazil and around the world. It’s a huge responsibility & I am so excited to go on this journey.”

The Brazilian legend made his mark on not just every Brazilian but also every Formula 1 fan worldwide. The F1 community lost a gem on that tragic day on the 1st of May 1994 in Imola. To pay tribute to Senna, when F1 returned to the circuit in 2020, the trophies awarded to the podium finishers were shaped like the track, and a 0.14-carat diamond was added at the turn where Senna died.

It’s no secret that the F1 community loved Senna, which is why it won’t come as a surprise that a documentary has already been made on his life.

Senna: The Documentary

The three-time world champion is and will always be a legend of the sport. Considering what a popular figure he was and owing to all his achievements before his tragic demise at the 1994 San Marino GP, award-winning British filmmaker Asif Kapadia made a documentary on the life and death of Ayrton Senna in 2010.
